A camcorder works by recording audio and video and then saving those to a storage device, there by creating movies/videos. The word camcorder is a combination of the words camera and recorder.

Earlier models of camcorders only used analog and recorded to VHS videotapes, and they were so big and bulky that they had to be carted around on a trolley. The information is turned into bytes of data. The contrast and colors become binary code (1s and 0s), and this data is stored as digital video.

How camcorders work for recording is the recorder, which, provides complex signaling functions that capture the video signals and transfers them to the recording medium, such as DVD. The recording and storage device is an important feature to the usability of camcorders.

Customer Review: Works extremely well with 1080i or 720p signals!
I've been pretty happy with the performance of the TH-42PWD8UK. I've had it for over a year now. Picture quality from DVD using component cable is very good, and has been what I am using it mostly for. I never feel the need for HD. DVDs looks awesome, as this unit is the native resolution of DVDs. I won't be far off to say that none of the HD sets in the store looks better than this one. But the reason I am writing this review is my surprise finding of how well it scales 1080i or 720p image when fed such signals. I recently got a Samsung HD tuner, and naturally I set the output to 480p, my TV's resolution. I also tried a Panasonic DVD recorder with HD-tuner, and the picture quality was about the same as the Samsung, very good. However, while tweaking some settings on the Samsung, I changed the output setting on the back of the unit to 720p and 1080i. I was expecting the TV not to display anything, but much to my surprise, a proper image is displayed. Even to my bigger surprise, the picture looks noticeably sharper and more detailed!! How can that be? The set is not HD! I pondered this for a while and came to the conclusion that the TV must have a much better scaling algorithm than the Samsung tuner. With HD tuner sending a 1080i signal, picture quality looks astounding! My friend was looking to buy a Panasonic 50" plasma, and came by to take a look at my TV. Both he and his wife were stunned by the picture quality and how it looks better than all the HD units they've seen. Anyway, I am extremely happy with the performance of the scaling algorithm on the TV. If you have HD source, set it to 1080i output and enjoy! You will not be disappointed. One thing that still puzzles me a bit is why HD materials look sharper and more detailed than DVDs, and I am talking about good quality DVDs here. Since this set is the native resolution of DVD, theoretically it's as good as it will get. HD material should look the same as DVDs, since the end result of what you see, IS 480p. I wonder if I get an upconverting DVDs, and send the unit a 1080i signal, whether it will look better than the standard DVD. In theory it shouldn't, since scaling 480p to 1080i and scale back would not gain you much, but does it? I guess when my current DVD player dies I'll get a new one and find out.
Customer Review: Great Value - Best Buy - No brainer ;)
This is an excellent plasma TV. I have it for little more than 6 months and I am happy that I bought this baby! I did research for about 8 months before I bought Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK. First thing, look @ at consumer reports or any website for reviews on Plasmas - on top 10 list more than 50% will be from Panasonic. This company knows how to dig plasmas. Second part is you need to decide about your needs - what exactly you are looking for. In my case, I wanted a plasma that's slim & slick. I ddin't want any speakers associated with the plasma for two reasons - the OEM speakers are NEVER decent quality & I didn't want huge looking thing on my wall. This plasma is basically industrial/commercial display - no speakers, no stands. And that was perfect for me as I can just hang it on the wall (I had to buy seperate wall mount). Another thing to keep in mind - this EDTV not HDTV. To be frank, I still can't understand the hype for HDTV. I don't have HDTV cable so for me it didn't matter. The quality I think equal to or better than HDTV (compared to HDTV plasmas what I had seen in retail stores). This TV doesn't have any stand or mount so you need to buy something on day 1 - otherwise you won't be able to put it anywhere. I bought the mount from CostCo and happy with that. For the connections - look @ the other review over here - there' all possible technical details on that one so I won't bore you with those. In the end, I will say this is a great plasma with awesome picture quality. If you are buying plasma, get yourself decent home theatre system too. Your A/V receiver can handle all the connections to your cable box, DVD, VCR, CD player etc. And finally, get yourself one of the fancy Logitech/harmony universal remote too. I got harmony 880 and love it. Tip - Plasma on wall, nice slick speakers with high output and 1 universal remote to manage everything will impress anyone anytime - including yourself!

There isn't much to complain about this Blu-Ray technology. The only main problem is that they have to release movies in this format that people have already bought in standard DVD format. In fact, seven of the eight major movie studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) have released movies in the Blu-ray format and six of them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Warner, Lionsgate and MGM) are releasing their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format.

Once again, there is a technology format war looming on the horizon. Many people don't remember the VHS - Betamax battle that broke out when video players were first introduced, making it possible for people to watch movies at home. This was a case of two non-compatible technologies, each of which was a format for taping full length feature films. Ultimately VHS won out, and the movie companies put out their products in that format - thus dooming Betamax and the product manufacturers that had adopted their technology, not to mention the thousands of consumers that had invested in Betamax players. We now find ourselves on the verge of creating a new set of sore losers.

Skirmishes over LCD versus plasma screen HD TV technology are ongoing, but that type of technology contest isn't as acute because you can watch TV or a movie on either type of screen. Currently, you can also play every DVD available on any DVD player that is in production and on the market. The next generation of DVD players, however, is coming over the horizon in the form of two distinct and incompatible technologies.

Toshiba versus Sony

Toshiba has developed a proprietary technology dubbed high definition DVD (HDDVD) and to support their format has developed alliances with Microsoft and Universal Films, among others. The HDDVD disks will be available in 15GB and two sided, 30GB versions.

By way of comparison, the current DVDs have enough storage for two hours of standard definition (SD) images, while the one-sided 15 gigabyte HDDVD disk can store up to eight hours of high definition (HD) images. The difference between SD and HD is simply twice the number of pixel lines displayed on the screen in the HD format, thus providing a crisper picture. The increased capacity of these disks will also allow for interactive features such as screen-in-screen director's discussion of movie scenes playing behind him that today's standard DVDs cannot support.

In the other corner is the Blu-Ray technology developed by Sony, who has lined up support from Apple, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Both formats use blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelength than red, allowing it to read the smaller digital data "spots" packed a lot more densely onto a standard-size disc. Blu-Ray disks are designed to carry up to 50GB of digital material, which may mean that Sony wins the compression competition.

The Early Rounds

Sony Pictures released the first six films on Blu-Ray disks in June of this year, and have released a few more since. Samsung has a Blu-Ray DVD player in the stores, while Sony's hardware division has released a Blu-Ray compatible PC. Toshiba has its initial HDDVD player on the market and there are a limited number of titles available in the format, mostly re-releases of previous first-run features.

Sony clearly jumped out to an early lead, with support from Dell, HP, Mitsubishi and a number of other hardware manufacturers. In addition, Sony Pictures also owns Columbia and MGM, giving them an enormous library to work with. Sony will also fold its technology into the PlayStation 3 gaming machine, their proprietary product whose 2nd version rules the roost in the videogame market.

On the Toshiba side of the battlefield, proponents argue that the HDDVD disks will be cheaper to produce and that it will be comparatively easy for disk replicators to retrofit their equipment for production purposes. The HDDVD format also makes production of recordable DVDs much simpler than with the Blu-Ray design.

Further, an alliance with Microsoft will be a formidable edge in this battle, should it turn into a protracted conflict. Microsoft's operating systems are going to be important cogs in the development of future home viewing systems, as the technology moves closer to merging the functions of computers and televisions. If movie downloads become a commercial success, PC compatibility will be critical for these disks.

The Consumer Issues

One of the reasons that Microsoft aligned with Toshiba's technology is that HDDVD provides for "mandatory managed copy." What that means is that unlike with today's conventional DVDs, managed copy allows consumers to make legitimate copies of their HD movies and enjoy this content around the home or across their personal networks. Making this feature mandatory will ensure a consistent consumer experience across all next-generation DVD content.

Then there is the element of iHD, which is the concept of maximizing high definition video for transport across the internet. This is a specific set of video specs which the iHD.org, a group of tech and media companies, is pushing as a cross-platform standard.

The theory is that next-generation HD movies will provide a level of interactive experience well beyond that of today's conventional DVDs. iHD technology is meant to provide a broad foundation to enable new interactivity with standards-based development tools and technologies.

The pitch for this standard is that it will provide consumers with enhanced content, navigation and functionality for HD films. The business reality is that Microsoft plans to implement iHD support in its Windows Vista operating system, which will not only be a significant step towards integrated video and computer systems but will make help drive adoption of the new Microsoft platform.

Duel to the Death Unlikely

There is some indication that all of these conflicting issues may ultimately force a compromise - some sort of merger or unification of the two technologies. Hardware manufacturers are hedging their bets, with the latest wrinkle being that Blu-Ray-aligned Hewlett Packard has requested that mandatory managed copy and the iHD standard be included in Blu-Ray's feature set. Sony has agreed to include the managed copy feature, but said no to iHD.

The Betamax - VHS battle was a tussle over hardware with the movie companies playing a predominant role, one Sony lost. This time around, there is much more uncertainty about how the next generation of home video will roll out. How will the Web and the PC fit in? Will the movies be delivered via disk or via download? How will the film industry protect its content rights and how can the hardware companies maximize their role?

PCs have become a commodity. If a scenario arises where every household needs a new computer to match up with new video technology, the Dells and HPs of this world stand to win big. If competing technology keeps people from investing in either, every involved business will suffer. If the film and DVD houses have to produce two sets of content and two disks for every film, their margins will grow considerably thinner as well. The tech bloggers seem to be increasingly inclined to believe that unification of some sort is inevitable. The corporations with the most to lose are too smart not to insist on it.

I have had ours since July of this year, I have a bunch of kids & was leary of the track record of some of these other manufacturers, in regards to warranty assistance SHOULD the need arrive! I tried (I repaeat TRIED!!) to contact several manufacturer's that were in the running for my consideration, in regards to their warranties, WHO, WHERE HOW...etc would I send/take my humongous plasma to? I am VERY rural (in the hills of TN!) MOST of them required I SHIP it to them!Do you know how big those boxes are that they come in? & the logistics of repacking it.........NOPE! "It aint a-happenin'!" Anyhow.... after MUCH deliberation & research I went with Panasonic (as their warranty is into your home should you need a repair, WOW!! :-) I bought this an older model with GREAT comsumer reviews,& a good value as the newermodels come out the price continues to fall! I have been EXTREMELY pleased, & nothings happened so far to need any warranty work! The TV is crisp & clear, plays beautifully!

Using the HDMI ports from a BluRay player and a HD-DVD player I fine tuned mine to the following settings: Picture Mode: Standard Picture: -6 Bright: +15 Color: -6 Tint: -3 Sharp: +5 Color Temp: Normal Color Management: Off All Filters: Off Those settings are for when 1080 is filling up the whole picture; but I have to lower the Picture and raise the Brightness for 4:3 or video with black bars at the top & bottom. Blacks are better on Standard-Def tube monitors; but black on Plasma's are much much better than the LCD's I've seen. I've attempted to help a few friends set up their LCD's for best black, but resolution deteriorates on most LCD's when blacks look good. On the other hand the Picture and Brightness tuning on this plasma behaves very similar to a Tube monitor. Blacks are still a bit too milky for my taste, but I guess I'll have to raise the room lighting to trick out my eyes. I like this plasma for the price I paid for it.


LCD projectors are the modern equivalent of the slide and overhead projector. LCD projectors use a small and usually colored LCD panel placed before a bright lamp, with the images on the screen provided by sources such as a DVD, VCR or a computer. LCD projectors are generally smaller in size and more easily transportable than former systems. Armed with a lens capable of projecting the images on any surface with a flat plane and not requiring supporting furniture like a big-sized television would, LCD projectors are getting increasingly viable with each passing day.

There are certain things to take into account when purchasing an LCD projector. The projector's resolution generally determines the price; the higher the resolution, the greater the price. If the need is for minute details to be precisely displayed, then higher resolution projectors are the way to go. The LCD projector's light output depends on the lumens rating, i.e. the higher the lumens rating the brighter the light output. For classrooms, projectors of 1000-2000 lumens suffice; for big conference rooms, the ideal projectors would be those between 2000-3000 lumens.

The ratio between the brightest and darkest spots of an image is called the projector contrast. When purchasing LCD projectors, it is feasible to go for contrasts of 400:1 or higher. This way the best and the clearest pictures are achieved.

If the projector is to be carried around to different locations, then it is best to purchase a light projector. Many LCD projectors today weigh below five pounds. The lighter projectors generally cost more though. Also, it is viable to get an LCD projector with multiple ports, in the event that you want to connect multiple video or computer sources to the projector simultaneously. Another factor that should be considered is the durability of the lamp. Replacements can be an exorbitant deal. A lamp life of 2000 hours is just about ideal.

I love my TH-42PX600U. It has an amazing picture and deep blacks, which is great for movies. The picture is fantastic when watching sports in HD. AND, amazing sound! Only a couple of small down-sides to this: 1. Only one tuner, so to watch split-screen or picture-in-picture, you need to have an external tuner (like a VCR) 2. Takes about 5 seconds to turn on. I think this maybe some power-saver mode. 3. Remote is a bit clunky. Not the nicest remote in the world. It gets the job done, but I find the round nav a bit difficult to use. Overall though, I dig it. If faced with the option to buy again, I would.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that for the fifth consecutive year the most common disruption to business was the loss of broadband internet connection, with 39 per cent of businesses reporting some kind of failure. In addition, the report concludes that long-term failure could be catastrophic.

Communication requirements for business includes credit card transactions, training, and other mission-critical functions. Business is increasingly reliant on internet communications. Ten years ago, much of this work was done on dedicated satellite communications links. However, increasingly, this transaction is occurring over telephone lines over the internet.

Mission-critical function disruptions cause extreme harm to the business. Such an outage could have serious legal and financial ramifications. Examples could threaten the health and safety of individuals (i. e. hospital systems).

In years past, mission-critical functions were managed with dedicated networks, often via satellite. But today in the U.S., hundreds of satellite communications stations every month are being decommissioned.

Growth of the Internet

Internet traffic continues to grow between 60% and 80% a year (Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) president Matthew J. Flanigan). "The web infrastructure, and even Google's, doesn't scale," said Vincent Dureau, Google's Chief Video Technologist.

The current perception is there is a significant excess capacity in carrier networks. This has led to a reduction in investment in optical fiber installation. But according to TIA, this is incorrect. Utilizing data on historical bandwidth drivers, past fiber and equipment usage trends, and an understanding of networks, the system is near its capacity limit. Carriers in the United States are rapidly running out of bandwidth and may face capacity shortages as soon as this year.

The telecommunications sector has been in a recession since 2000. The boom and bust in telecommunications was coincidental with the boom and bust in the "dot-com bubble" of Internet stocks. The dot-coms received most of the publicity, but the telecommunications industry accounted for a larger share of market capitalization gained and lost than the dot-coms. The result has been a technology priced under replacement cost. Competitive technologies have suffered.

The Role of the HDTV Revolution

The rapid adoption of HDTV is a significant force in the system. When Joe Q. Public buys new video equipment, the DVD player's role in the system is reanalyzed. Many now choose to download movies over the internet instead of using DVD's. This trend is likely to continue.

"Most of the internet traffic is peer-to-peer, and most of that is video. Every year we have to invest substantially just to maintain the user experience. In fact it (investment) has actually decreased," Richard Alden, CEO of ONO, a large Spanish Cable Company , told the Cable Europe Congress in Amsterdam.

Despite the relatively small number of users, research indicates that systems such as BitTorrent and YouTube account for more than half of all internet traffic. In 1995 the total amount of data transacted over the Internet backbone was about 1.5 million GB. By 2006, this had grown to over 700 million GB.

Jonathan Arber, a technology analyst with Ovum, said "the problem is that media companies are starting to use these peer-to-peer methods to distribute videos but the internet providers are the ones paying for it."

ABI Research estimates that the number of video downloads to increase from 215 million in this year (2008) to 2.4 billion in 2012. This number becomes more impressive when one takes into account that a much higher per cent of those downloads in 2012 will be high-definition files, which are much larger (A non High Def DVD movie is approximately 3 GB/Hour, HDTV file size is dependent on encoding: an MPEG-2 (MPEG-2 is the standard used by the DISH Network, MPEG-1 is used by Direct TV) encoded high def movie file size is approximately 9 GB/Hour, an unencoded 1280 X 720 movie file size is over 150 GB/Hour, and an unencoded 1920 X 1080 movie file size is over 350 GB/Hour).

The growth in video downloads could create an internet traffic jam that threatens the net's development, according to Google. Websites like YouTube (owned by Google) are heightening the problem and new developments will only make the problem worse.

Bandwidth-intensive applications like video download by even a small portion of Internet users may degrade service, and may even crash the Internet, or parts of it ("Broadband Connectivity Competition Policy" FTC Staff Report, 2007).

Investment in the Internet Is Down

The Satellite Business has not been very profitable in recent years. Satellite Business Systems (a Joint Venture of Comsat, IBM, and Aetna) spent more than a billion dollars for a high speed satellite network supply satellite communication to businesses. It was a total business failure.

Currently, the trend is to rely on the fiber internet for business operations. Hundreds of remote stations (the satellite industry refers to the stations as P.E.S. or personal earth stations), are decommissioned every month in the United States. Relying on the local internet (fiber) is cheaper. The main reason that optical fiber is cheaper is that this market was funded (some say over funded) during the dot-com bubble. With the excess supply, prices are dirt cheap.

Carriers may not expand their capital-expenditure budgets, because while a bandwidth shortage is a matter of debate, a capital shortage is not. Telecom companies revenue growth has been poor. Borrowing money to add capacity is difficult in this environment. "Bandwidth brownouts" might do what current industry data seemingly cannot-convince Wall Street that investment is necessary.

"National and state policies toward broadband innovation and deployment directly affect the ability of network operating companies to raise investment funding in the capital markets. To the extent that these policies inject uncertainty into the marketplace, threaten the potential return on infrastructure investments, or interfere with the ability to operate the networks in a way that maximizes capacity and efficiency, such policies would directly and negatively limit the ability of network operating companies to support expanding data traffic on the Internet" (David McClure, US Internet Industry Association).

The outcome of these trends is not clear. The conclusion, that the internet is likely to be overtaxed, has been reached by many, though it seems largely to be a secret outside of academia.

If the bean-counters react in time and significantly increase funding of fiber projects, none of the worst case scenarios is necessary. However prudence would dictate that business planners for mission-critical applications account for the potential of systematic internet unreliability.

We bought the TH-65PZ750U both because an independent/non-profit consumer magazine rated its little brother, the TH-58PZ750U, as the top-performing TV in its size class, and because Panasonic TVs in general were rated as having the least-frequent / smallest number of problems/repairs. In my own experience, one can't take for granted getting both high performance and reliability in one product. So with a credible source saying that Panasonic nailed both, we figured we can't go wrong. We've been using this TV for about 4 months and are very pleased. The picture looked awesome right out of the box. The only adjustment we've made since then is to back off the "Picture" setting because we found it to be very bright; not a flaw, just preference. I am particularly fussy about picture quality, and until now preferred smaller screens because the big ones just didn't look good to me. But the TH-65PZ750U changed that. The HDTV picture is incredible. The colors are vivid but not embellished, the level of detail is stunning, and the edges are nice and crisp. In fact, with a good HD source, the TH-65PZ750U is able to give the illusion of looking out a window or "being right there". But it also excels with regular non-HD sources as well. On top of all that, the TV itself has a nice gloss-black frame that looks really sharp. Obviously a matter of taste, but some of the gray-plastic frames on other TVs make them look cheezy and could be of detriment to the "wife-approval factor". Ours is being used as a monitor connected to a home theater system, so I am unable to comment on the TV's built-in tuner or sound quality. So if you want top-shelf picture quality from a company with a good track record for reliability, the Panasonic TH-65PZ750U is definitely worth putting at the top of your short list.

And the "A" specific industrial model was upgraded with 2 HDMI ports but still has an available slot for adding more HDMI, DVI, or other inputs your system may require. It does have built in component video inputs but they are BNC type connectors so you will need 3 adapters for your RCA type cables before connecting. All in all its a 5 star product from Panasonic. The remote is easy to navigate, the manual is well written and easy to translate, but as you may already know this plasma does not have a built in tuner, so you'll either need a cable or satellite tuner which is not a problem for most people making this a centerpiece in a home theater setup. A word of caution though, HDTV is addictive.....just when you get comfortable with your new 42" Panny you may be struck with a deep regret you didn't go for the 50" model. This is just fair Warning! I am the lead installer for a company that installs RealHomeTheaters, so hopefully my experience can be of some help. I have used mounts like this numberous times. If you look at the connection point for the arms, all four connect in the center of the wall plate. If your TV weights over 40 pounds the wall plate bowes in the middel, because the plate lag bolts to the wall at the far edges where your studs are (usually 16 inches apart). Simply put this is a very flimsy mount! Consider going with something stronger like a OmniMount UCL-XP Dual Arm Cantilever Mount (fits 42"-63" flat panels) Hope this helps get your RealHomeTheaters off the ground!

The home theater amplifier was also originally just a component of the A/V receiver. As the use of custom components began to rise in popularity, though, the amplifier was one of the first pieces to be separated. A separate amplifier allows for a much greater level of control when it comes to the volume and clarity of your audio, and when combined with a preamplifier, will allow you to customize your audio experience to the layout of the room or rooms that your system covers.

As previously mentioned, the home theater amplifier is sometimes referred to as the power amplifier because it is independently powered, as opposed to having to share its power with the other components of the A/V receiver. When audio information is sent to the amplifier from an A/V receiver or other decoder, it is sent as separate audio channels which are then independently amplified. The specific levels of amplification can be altered at the amplifier itself, allowing you to "shape" the end result to accentuate the specific qualities of your audio that you prefer and that work best with the acoustics of your home layout. Audio components manufacturers such as PSB strive to include as many options for audio customization as possible, ranging from basic graphics equalizers and volume controls to virtual audio effects, bass boosting technology, and the ability to emulate a wider range of sounds from individual speakers to better control the way that your home theater system plays audio.

If you are designing a very large home theater room or if you plan to have a complicated theatre layout, consider purchasing these components. When the two pieces are installed and are working together, you will have greater control over volume, better sound quality and clarity, and an optimum system for making additional customization changes to. This will maximize the quality of sound and video passing between the Blu-ray and the HDTV. Also, this is the only cable required to connect these two components, excluding power plugs.

2) For this example you want to connect a brand new HDTV, a new Blu-ray DVD player, and a full surround sound system. The best way to connect these three devices, provided the Surround A/V Receiver has HDMI input/output capability, is to use a short HDMI cable from the Blu-ray to the A/V Receiver and run a longer HDMI cable from the A/V Receiver's output to the HDTV. This allows the receiver to switch the HDMI connections and is especially useful if your new HDTV only has one HDMI jack and you have multiple pieces of equipment with HDMI jacks that you want to connect. It will also make it possible for the A/V Receiver to use the digital Audio track from the Blu-ray player in order to give you mind-blowing surround sound when playing your new Blu-ray DVDs.

3) In this instance you want to connect a DVD player with an older HDTV and a surround sound system. When you go about connecting these items, the first thing to do is check what type of video connections your DVD player and HDTV have. Check Scenario 2 if your HDTV has a DVI or HDMI connection and your DVD player has either connections. If the HDTV's best connection is a DVI connection and your DVD player has HDMI, a simple conversion cable can help to convey the digital Video signal to the HDTV. To pass the digital Audio portion of your signal from your DVD player to your A/V Receiver, you need either a Coaxial Digital (the orange jack on you're A/V Reciever) or a Toslink Optical (the small square jack that says 'optical on the A/V Reciver).
